This March, we’re asking a big question: What does independence really mean?
It’s more than just living on your own. It’s the freedom to make choices. The dignity of a job with purpose. The confidence to be a part of your community and knowing you belong there.
During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we’re going to be sharing stories that show what independence looks like for the people we serve—and how we all have a role to play in building a more inclusive world.

For many of the people we serve at D.E.S.I., independence doesn’t happen all at once. It grows over time through opportunity, support, and practice. It can begin with something small, like learning a new skill, finding a new interest, or even speaking up for themselves. Over time, those small moments build into something powerful.Recently, one of our clients, Gio, celebrated an exciting moment in his journey. Gio had been working hard to build his skills, confidence, and independence, preparing for an important goal: his first day of work. When the day finally arrived, Gio was ready. With a big smile and a lot of determination, he started his new job at the YMCA.

Moments like this are powerful. Gio’s dedication, positive attitude, and willingness to keep learning made this milestone possible, and we couldn’t be prouder of him.
At D.E.S.I., we focus on the whole person, providing the tools for:
➡️ Choice: From daily decisions to life-changing plans.
➡️ Purpose: Through job training and meaningful work.
➡️ Belonging: By fostering connections and community integration.
When we invest in these areas, we create a world where everyone can thrive.

Independence isn’t one single thing. It’s a combination of skills, opportunities, and support that allows every person to make their own decisions. Each step forward builds confidence and opens new possibilities.
At D.E.S.I., we are there for every step of that journey.
